A novel by Elias Ward

The Lantern Keeper

On an island with one light and one keeper, a ship arrives that sank forty years ago. And it is looking for her.

“Haunting, tender and impossible to put down. Ward writes the sea as if he has drowned in it and come back to tell us.”

The story

Some lights are kept for the living.

Mara Quill has kept the lighthouse on Grey Harbour alone since her father walked into the sea. She likes it that way. The island is quiet, the work is honest, and nobody asks her about the night her mother disappeared.

Then, in the worst storm in forty years, the light goes out and a ship sails into the harbour that every chart says is lying at the bottom of the bay. Its crew have not aged a day. Its captain knows Mara's name.

As the fog closes in and the mainland ferry stops running, Mara has seven nights to learn what her family promised the sea, and what it will cost to keep that promise.

Chapter one

The night the light went out

The ship came in on the night the light went out.

Mara Quill had kept the lamp on Grey Harbour for nineteen years, and in all that time it had never once failed her. She had trimmed its wick through gales that tore the slates from the cottage roof, polished its lens on mornings so cold the cloth froze to her fingers, and climbed its hundred and twelve steps so often that she counted them in her sleep.

So when the beam stuttered, flared and died at a quarter past two, she did not panic. She lit the storm lantern, pulled on her father's oilskin and began to climb.
